Seasonal/local

The Canteen (80 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY) They always offer a veggie, vegan and gluten free option on their seasonal, frequently changing menu; all meals come with free soup! Often has live music.

Updated: 18/10/15 I went here again the other day and I had a delcious ratatouille with buckwheat toast. The veggies seemed to be slow-cooked and really rich - delicious!

The Olive Shed (Floating Harbour, Prince's Wharf, BS1 4RN)
I have a confession to make: despite the fact that I love olives, I have never been here. I think it's because I don't ever make it terribly close to this place and so I'm not in the area for lunch, and because I've never been, I don't suggest booking for dinner. A vicious, olive-based circle. Looking at their menu, I feel like I've missed out. Not only do they do vegan food, but it is actually labelled (it's a miracle!), which I really appreciate. They have olives (surprisingly), hummus, and apricot & roasted pepper salad, among other things. Unfortunately, they only have sample menus on their site, which states: "Please note that our restuarant menu changes on a weekly basis and the sample menus may contain items not available on the day of your visit and are subject to change with out notice." It is therefore advisable to contact them ahead of time to make sure that they can cater for you. They also do buffet food for outside catering.

Poco (45 Jamaica Street, Stokes Croft BS2 8JP)
While this review says that the vegan options are basically salad, with a wonderfully creative menu, I think Poco can do better than this so I contacted them on Facebook. They replied 'Yes we do! we have various dishes that can be adapted to suit' - I'd like to give them a try, but would consider booking in advance to provide a bit of notice. They take bookings on poco@eatpoco.com, but not for Friday or Saturday. Most of their veg is locally sourced and they seek to recycle or upcycle almost all of their waste. Receives four stars from Time Out Magazine and won the 2013 Observer Food Monthly award for best ethical restaurant.

Prince of Wales pub (5 Gloucestor Rd, Bishopston)
A seasonal menu made with local ingredients, this pub is happy to make lots of stuff vegan on request (it's all labelled on their menu - hurrah!). Options include soup, ciabatta, bean burgers, tempura, and enchiladas. I think I've also been told that they have vegan roast dinner options.

River Cottage Canteen (St John's Court, top of Whiteladies Rd, BS8 2QY)
Housed in a listed building, this lovely place puts locally-sourced food front and centre. Their frequently changing online menus aren't labelled with vegan options, but they will write this on for you when you go in person. They almost always have vegan options available and the food is really tasty. Have a look at their Visit Bristol listing for more info. It's often busy, so it's worth booking ahead.

The Townhouse (85 Whiteladies Road)
I went here for a friend's birthday a couple of years ago, but have repeatedly forgotten to add this place to the list! Although The Townhouse doesn't have many vegan options (if any) on the regular menu, they were very accomodating when we asked in advance for vegan food, making me a lovely beetroot and barley risotto. As far as I'm concerned, any good restaurant should be able to adapt to the diner's needs, and this is certainly a good restaurant.

The Watershed (Canons Road, harbourside)
The changing menu means that you won't get bored, and all their food is local and organic where possible;. they sell a great mix of light-bites and hearty meals. Unfortunately they've stopped serving my favourite dish (their mezze) in this round of menus, but I was promised that it would be back! They are also the best cinema in Bristol, showing loads of foreign, arthouse and edge-of-Hollywood films - so why not enjoy dinner and see a film while you're at it? One of my favourite places to be.
Ask for vegan risotto or try the hummus and olive mezze plate

Wilks (1-3 Chandos Rd, BS6 6PG) - 1 Michelin star
So I had a look through their menu and it sounded delicious, but not terribly vegan. I don't like the thought of missing out on good food, so I contacted Wilks to ask if they could cater for vegans and Christine responded (24/6/15) saying that they could adapt their vegetable taster menu served on Sunday evenings - £32 with optional wine pairings. I would imagine that booking ahead is a good idea anyway for this place, but I'd contact them in advance just to ensure that they have enough notice to prepare something delicious. I've never eaten at a Michelin starred-restaurant before, so I'm incredibly excited to try Wilks. Note: I am not sure they would be able to accomodate vegans at lunch time without notice.
