Closed down

For any places that have shut down, I've moved their entry here, in case they pop up again, and to make sure people know that they have shut down.

Bacchus (59 Apsley Road, Whiteladies Road end) Closed as of October 2013
I went here a few days ago with my mum, aunt and cousin for lunch and the food was lovely. I spend a lot of time in this part of the world as I'm a student, so couldn't believe that I'd never thought to eat here before. Apparently this place used to be called Rucola (click here for a mini history of the cafe). There is a good-sized mezze menu including olives, hummus, dolmades (on the menu as 'wine leaves'), falafels and flatbead for only £2.50 each. They have a breakfast menu, but I couldn't see much on there that looked vegan, but I will certainly ask next time I'm there. They sell some lovely drinks too (including Bellevoir lemonade etc) and the waiters are friendly and funny.

Blue Juice (Cotham Hill) Vanished around March 2014
As well as selling lots of nice juice, their menu caters relatively well for vegans. Their wraps are good, with rather different fillings to Magic Roll (below). They do breakfast wraps (not sure whether they can do a vegan version of these), salad-ish wraps (like quinoa) and some more Mexican-inspired versions. I'm going to see what can be made vegan and report back!

Budokan (Clifton Down) Closed about 2011
This was a great Asian restaurant with some good offerings for vegans, including tempura and noodles. The setting was nice and the staff had good knowledge of the food.

Cafe Rubicon (Chandos Road) and Rubicon Too (Cotham Hill)
I just came across these cafes as Rubicon Too has recently opened on Cotham Hill. I was lured in by a sign saying that they did vegan cake, and so they did. I would have taken a picture of this cake but it looked so good that I forgot and just ate it (sorry). It was really nice, and at £2.25, not horrendously expensive. The rest of their menu is not terribly vegan, but they do things like jacket potatoes and beans on toast, so I'm sure they could whip something up. I'm not sure if they do soya milk - will ask next time I go past.

Update October 2nd 2013

The last time I went in here, they had no vegan cakes and no idea what I was talking about, so probably best to assume that they don't cater for vegans now.

De Muths (Bath) (closed some time in 2014 - really sad about this, but apparently they still have an amazing cookery school!)
Ok, so it's not strictly in Bristol, but I had to plug my favourite restaurant here, too! A little on the pricey side, this completely vegetarian restaurant has loads of creative vegan starters and mains, along with some wonderful vegan desserts, which can be rare. I love it here!
Highly recommended

The H Bar (Colston Hall, just off the centre)
I've yet to eat here, but I had a look at the cafe menu this morning and the tapas looks pretty good. They have olives, sundried tomatoes, vine leaves, hummus and chips. They also have marinated artichokes and bread & olive oil, but strangely these aren't listed as vegetarian (I imagine they are, someone probably got confused with anchovies). They also have a choice of 4 cold tapas/salad items from the deli counter for £7.95, which is good value (individual veggie dishes are £3.50-95 each). They also have soya milk, but to be honest, the coffee is extremely expensive (£2.60 for a tiny soya latte, although it is fairtrade), so why not have a cider or some delicious Orchard Pig juice instead.

The breakfast menu might be vegan adaptable, but I'm not sure how much of the other food (sandwiches, bruschetta etc) is pre-made, and a lot of that features cheese. Having a look at the specials board, the daily risotto and pasta (served in both the cafe and restaurant) might potentially be vegan, but I'd call ahead to make sure.

La Tasca (Cabot Circus) - no idea when this shut, maybe around 2010
They cater for vegans quite well; I've not been to the one in Bristol, but always eat here when I'm in Bournemouth. They take allergies and dietary requirements very seriously, and have information about all their dishes on their website (vegan, nuts, soya, GM, gluten). I find this so helpful - it would be wonderful if everywhere else could do the same thing. They have a section on their website to sign up for a loyalty card, which I highly recommend, as it gets you 20% off, seven days a week - bargain! I love tapas because you can try a bit of everything!

Mezza Bar (The Triangle, formerly St Michaels Hill - both branches shut) Closed around summer 2013
I can't believe this place has shut!! I really loved it here and would get food there once a week, sometimes more often. As far as I could tell it was always pretty popular so I'm not sure why it closed.

Here is what I said about Mezza Bar before it shut: Super cheap, delicious Lebanese food. They have hummus, lovely smoky baba ganoush, spicy potatoes, cous cous, tabbouleh, vineleaves and wraps, with friendly staff. Great for lunch.
Cheap

My Burrito (Bristol city centre) Closed around March 2015.

Re-opened as Fuego, but their website doesn't have a menu, so I've no idea if it's vegan.
I went here the other day and I really enjoyed it. For about £6 you can get a massive vegan burrito with rice, salads, salsa, beans, guacamole and veg. I had the medium salsa, which was hot enough to taste but not burn your mouth off. Their website says that they support Vegfest, a vegan fayre, and that they serve "Vegan churros and chocolate alongside our burritos. Watch out for our butternut squash and vegan chorizo burrito!"

Their site also tells you how many calories are in a standard (beef) burrito, which is to be commended. I won't spoil it for you here in case you don't want to know (!) but I must say I was a bit shocked at how high it was. That being said, I reckon the vegan burritos are probably less, and if you wanted you could probably get one with more veg and salad, and less beans/rice.

Although I don't eat meat, we're never going to be able to persuade people to stop eating it, so I like to know that the places I eat treat animals in the best way possible. At My Burrito "All our meat comes from a local butcher and meets farm assured standards." Their food is also made from fresh produce, and their plates are made of palm tree leaves, which have simply been heated into shape.

The Porter (15 George Street, Bath BA1 2QS)
All vegetarian menu, in a nice pub; a good place to go for a drink, too! However, the person I ordered the food from had no idea which of the specials was vegan (the menu lists them), and the guy she brought to enlighten us also had no idea. They didn't have my first choice, and failed to inform my partner that half his meal was unavailable until well after we'd ordered. That being said, the staff were really nice, the food was excellent (I had the bean chilli), and was very reasonably priced.

Sahra (Queens Road, near the Student Union) Closed as of October 2013
This place used to be the lovely Sands, but has been taken over by the people that run Mezza above. This review calls it "a beautiful and very relaxed venue." The menu lists hommos, vine leaves, baba ganoush, fried aubergine, tabbouleh, cous cous, falafel, spicy potatoes and broad beans in a sauce. Update: have now been here and the food was excellent although not terribly cheap - their baba ganoush is lovely and smoky - and the restaurant is lovely to look at.

Sahra looks lovely inside.

Swinky's Sweets (bottom of Park Street, on the right going up) Closed as of October 2013
Strangely enough, it doesn't say this on their website, but this cute shop sells a vegan cupcake (and it's yummy). Last time I went there, I was told that they'd be making a vegan chocolate sponge cake, too - I hope they have!
Yes, it tastes as good as it looks!

Tampopo (Cabot Circus) - closed late July/early August 2015

I haven't been there yet, but I thought I'd check out their website to see if they actually labelled their vegan food on their online menu. Amazingly, they do! Why can't everyone else do this too? They have yummy sounding vegetable rolls, tempura, yaki udon noodles, chap chae Korean noodles, com Hué rice dish and tahu goreng tofu. Accompaniments include plain rice, udon noodles and pak choi. Weirdly, though, a chicken dish is listed as vegan, although it might just mean that it can be made vegan upon request. I will definitely be checking this place out!

Update (mid 2013)
I've now been to Tampopo and I have to say, the food was excellent; the portion sizes were good, and the food felt really fresh and healthy. It wasn't too expensive either (although not cheap) - even better, students get 20% off if they show their student card when they ask for the bill!

Yum Yum Thai (Park Street, on the right going up, about half way up) Closed later 2012/early 2013
This place shut without my realising it - I discovered when I wanted to take a friend there =[ Here is what I said before it shut: One waitress knows what 'vegan' means, another doesn't! I can't remember whether vegan options are actually listed on the menu, but they can make one for you - mine was very tasty. Good value too! Beware - portion sizes are not to be underestimated!
