Bill's (67-69 Queen's Rd - Clifton Triangle)
Their menu suggests that they have a few vegan options. Light bites: olives; bread & olive oil; hummus. Veggie mezze board: sunblushed tomatoes and basil, baba ganoush, extra virgin olive oil, hummus, marinated olives, tortilla chips andgrilled piadina bread (ask to omit the halloumi). The vegan main is crunchy kale leaf salad: chickpeas, red cabbage, radish, quinoa, red onions, chargrilled vegetables, almond and ginger dressing, topped with avocado, toasted sesame seedsand flaked almonds. Just double check the dressing.

Byron Burger (Clifton Triangle, BS8 1RE)
I know, I know, it's a hamburger restaurant. Nevertheless, this place is really good at adapting to different requirements; when I went there for a work event, I called in advance to see what they could do, and the staff were really helpful. I had the portobello mushroom burger with no bun (called 'skinny' apparently - I made up for it by ordering chips), minus the goat's cheese and aioli, which I swapped for avocado. All in all, it was pretty good.

Caffe Gusto (Clifton Down; top of Park Street; bottom of station approach to Temple Meads, everywhere!)
You can make your own sandwich from a whole range of ingredients and they do soya milk too. The vegan toasted falafel flatbread is asolutely delicious, as is their cinnamon & apple flapjack.

Caffe Nero (1 Union St, BS1 2DD; The Galleries unit 15-17, BS1 3XD; Horsefair Unit 102/104 Bristol, BS1 3JX; 38 Corn Street, BS1 1HT) - added 30/10/2015
Caffe Nero has lots of tasty vegan snacks to go with their soya milk coffee: Yoyo Bear fruit rollups, Propercorn, and soya porridge (with fruit compote or maple syrup). They also now have some lunch-y options, too: Falafel & Tabbouleh Salad, Vegetable Arrabbiata Pasta, and a Houmous & Falafel Wrap. It's good to see more places adopting vegan options, and even better that their website has full nutrional info, so you can have a look in advance!

Cosy Club (Corn St)
Run by the same people who do the Lounges. Find their vegan menu here.  They used to have the same lovely bean burger as the Lounges but they also got rid of it - they replaced it with a beetroot burger which I really hate. Sometimes beetroot tastes too earthy and it just strays a little close to mold for my liking. Decide for yourself though.

Giraffe (Cabot Circus, near House of Fraser)
Giraffe is another restaurant that takes labelling seriously, which I really appreciate. On their website, you can see what is suitable for vegans (and whether a product contains any other allergens) by hovering over the 'i' on each menu item. For sharing, they have olives, stir-fried soya beans, Hummus, Baba Ganoush & Mixed Olives Sharing Platter, Phod Malay Udon Noodles and Edamame, Asparagus & Soba Noodle Salad.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Park Street, about 2/3 of the way up; Cabot Circus)
I emailed the people at GBK and they replied (within the hour!) to let me know that the Malay burger (without mayo) and the falafel burger (without raita) are vegan. Update: I ate here yesterday and the food was ace, although they've changed their menu. The falafel burger is still there, but the malay is gone. I really enjoyed my burger, especially the delicious sweet chili sauce and hummus, although these did make the bottom bun quite soggy, so you might have to eat yours with a knife and fork too! That being said, these cost about £7 each, and they don't come with fries, so it isn't terribly cheap. Extras include avocado, mushroom, pineapple for £1.65 each.

A huuuge falafel burger at Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

The Lounges (Totterdown; Bedminster; Redland; Horfield - have a look at their website)
The staff are super helpful, and will always be able to find you something to eat. They do vegan breakfast, tapas, bean burger and sometimes their (delicious) soup is vegan. Good value, and I love the decor in these places - it looks like a labour of love to design each place - especially the old photos they have on the walls.

Update October 2nd 2013
I'm afraid these haven't been as good lately. I love their breakfasts but recently, when I have asked for the vegan version, it looks like they've just taken stuff out and not replaced it with anything much because these breakfasts always look alot smaller than the meat ones. This first happened at Deco Lounge maybe a year ago, and the staff member informed me of this very rudely (I just put it down to a bad day). It looks like this has now become some sort of policy, which is a bit of a shame, especially if you're actually allergic to egg or dairy and not being difficult by choice like me. The other thing is that they have now taken their bean burger off their menu, and replaced it with a falafel and chipotle burger which just is not half as nice. Considering that I would always order either the breakfast or bean burger, this means that I am now less likely to suggest going to the Lounges. That being said, the staff are still great and the breakfast is still tasty.

Nando's (Park St, about half way up)
So, Nando's is largely about chicken. Several of my friends love this place but I've always declined invitations to go there because I thought there would be nothing for me to eat. A quick search of their website, however, dispells this myth, as they do have one vegan option (a veggie pitta - make sure you ask for mayo free!). The company actually seems to take veggie cooking pretty seriously, stating that they use:
  • "A separate area of the grill is defined for the exclusive cooking of vegetarian and bean burgers.
  • Separate utensils are always used with vegetable products.
  • Separate bottles of the Nando’s bastes are used exclusively for basting the vegetarian products."
I might take my friends up on their offer now!

The Slug and Lettuce (Corn St)
This place does nice cocktails, but I haven't actually eaten here yet. Their website provides allergy information but alot of their dishes are difficult in this respect. For example, the vegetarian breakfast features egg; this was simply listed as 'not vegan' and there was no indication of whether the dish could just be made without - I would imagine that it can be. Only two things are listed as vegan on this menu, although they do sound nice (bread & olives and their spicy sweet potato salad). To find out if anything can be made vegan on the day, I suppose you would just have to go there.

Toby Carvery (42 Bristol Rd, Whitchurch, BS14 0PF)
I know it probably feels weird to see this listed here, but hear me out: Toby Carvery does do vegan food and it's actually pretty good. Have a look at their carvery menu and you'll see that 3/5 of the vegetarian options are vegan!
  • Lentil cottage pie
  • Butternut squash crumble
  • Carrot & chickpea wellington (really tasty and filling)
  • Carvery option with just vegetables and no meat

Wetherspoons (top of Park Street; behind Temple Meads; Corn Street)
Their food is always good, and very cheap, but Wetherspoons can sometimes be a bit noisy and busy. Their curry is listed as vegan if you have it without naan bread. Other items that may be vegan but aren't listed are: baked potato with beans/roast veg, flatbread with hummous and peppers, roast veg, chickpea and couscous salad. Unfortunately, their staff don't know much about their food, so are unable to answer questions; I've messaged Wetherspoons to enquire about their food, and if they reply I'll let you know! In the one behind TM, a drunk man once tried to lick me...

Update October 2nd 2013
The good news is that I've just spotted this excellent dietary requirements finder on their website, just hit the vegan option. The bad news is that I went on their website to see if they had changed their menu because last time I went to a Wetherspoons, I really couldn't find their curry anywhere on the on-site menu. According to their online menu, they still do it. Not really sure what's going on there, so maybe best to call ahead to double check before you go.
