A Bar of Chocolate (St Nics Market)
A lovely little chocolate shop! I found it by accident this weekend - the man who was working at the time knew all about the products in the shop, which was impressive. They have two truffles that are vegan at the moment - whole dark chocolate cherries and violet chocolates - which taste absolutely incredible. They also sell the usual brands of vegan chocolate (Plamil, Booja Booja), and are hoping to have more vegan choccies in at Christmas.

The sign that tempted me into A Bar of Chocolate! |
Better Food (94 Whiteladies Road; The Proving House, Sevier Street, St Werburghs, BS2 9QS)
This
shop sells loads of yummy vegan things including milkshake, biscuits,
chocolate and wine, as well as lots of other lovely things like herbal
tea. Unlike Wild Oats (see below), they don't have a whole lot of vegan
friendly baked stuff, but they do have a wonderful selection of fruit
and veg. You can really taste the love that has gone in to producing
this stuff; their onions, for example, are much stronger than the
supermarket ones.

Bristol Bakehouse (mostly an online shop, but they are occasionally at the harbourside market near Watershed)
Their website says "Choose from vanilla, gingerbread or chocolate cupcakes or go large with a divine fruit cake. All of the aforementioned delicious luxuries come with either ‘buttercream’ or fondant icing. Our jams, vanilla fudge and fondant cake toppers are also vegan." YESSSSSSSSS! I love cake but often feel that vegans are left out, even though vegan cake is probably easier to make as you can't over egg the pudding, as it were. I can confirm that their cakes really do look this good as my friend bought me one with an owl on it and it was really cute! They deliver for free to one of the little cafe sheds near the Arnolfini, but I forget which, and they also do cupcake decorating courses which are sometimes on Groupon with a big discount.
To keep up to date with the Bristol Bakehouse, it is probably best to 'like' their Facebook page.

Cook (top of Whiteladies Road, near Apsley Road)
Describing
themselves as 'the alternative to home cooking', Cook have a good
range of vegan food (and helpful staff!); the idea is that they make
ready-meals the way you'd make them at home, with no additives or other
rubbish. They're fairly cheap (you can get a main for 2 for £6), and
you can get portions for 1,2 or 4 - they do home delivery for some
items too. I tried the casserole and coconut rice, and it was really
delicious; the only down side is that the portions are a bit on the
small side.
As
vegan food isn't listed on their site, here's what they told me: aloo
gobi saag, Indonesian veg curry, minted couscous, red lentil
& mixed bean casserole, roast veg & chickpea curry,
veg & bean chilli, coconut & lime leaf rice, peas
pilau, Indian spiced hummous, chickpea coriander dip, veg rice. Make sure you recycle the packaging! Find out where here.

Earthbound (Abbotsford Road, just off Cotham Hill)
Another
local grocery shop that sells a great range of vegan treats (lovely
choccies here!) and beauty products, as well as your standard fare.
They're also lovely to the Bristol University Fairtrade Society, not
that you need any more reasons to shop here!

Shakeaway (8 The Arcade, Bristol BS1 3JA) - added 28/6/15.
This is the only place I've listed twice on here (in both the lunch & breakfast and shop sections) because I didn't want anyone to miss out on fantastic vegan milkshakes. I heard tell a while ago that Shakeaway might have vegan options, but didn't want to check because I almost couldn't bear the disappointment. I had a look and the menu posted in the window said something to the effect of 'if you're vegan, talk to us and we'll tell you your options.' This sounded promising, but I was sort of annoyed that this wasn't just posted in the window - to try and avoid having to make a split-second decision at the till, I googled it and tried to find a menu online, but no such luck. Ok, then I thought, I'll give it a try, even though there's a queue (largely populated by 14 year olds, I haven't felt so old for quite some time). I got to the till and they had a vegan menu! I felt slightly overwhelmed, so I just chose a regular soya chocolate shake. It was absolutely delicious - thick, creamy and so tasty! I remember that they had chocolate, bourbon, roasted hazelnuts, strawberry, apple and some other fruity options (I wanted something unhealthy). Some of these flavours aren't even vegetarian (e.g. blackjacks - I think due to gelatine), so be a bit careful when ordering. Unfortunately, these shakes aren't cheap anyway, but with the soya options it's even more expensive (Regular add 99p, Large add £1.49) - I think mine was £4.40, which is treat price, rather than a regular thing. To be honest that's probably good given how sugary they taste...

Wild Oats (Lower Redland Road)
Sells
a wonderful range of vegan sandwiches, salad pots, dips and baked
goods (cakes, samosas). I love this shop because vegans are so often
left out when it comes to this sort of thing - especially cake! - and
their offerings are always delicious. Also sells your standard stuff:
vegan burgers, sausages yogurt, soya milk etc.
Highly recommended
