Pizza

A Capella (184c Wells Rd, BS4 2AL)
Some lovely mezze here (olives, dolmades (vineleaves) and hummus) which you can have as a platter. Their tasty-sounding salads are made fresh to order so you can just have them omit any dairy (sundried & fresh tomato salad; mango, olive & cucumber). They are pretty famous in Totterdown for their pizza, and have an impressive list of vegetarian pizza that can be made vegan without cheese. A Capella was number 1 in the 2013 Trip Advisor pick of pizzerias across the UK.

Boca Bar (Paintworks, Bath Rd, BS4 3EH)
Pizza is available with lots of toppings (minus the cheese): sundried tomato, caramelised onions, olives, spinach, butternut squash, marinated artichokes, roasted peppers. In fact, they say that their Amazonia pizza works really well as a vegan option without the cheese, so they have thought about us! I personally love a good pizza crammed full of veggies. They also have chips, olive and bread & olive oil. They have a deli counter with tabbouleh and hummus, and I bet their Boca mixed salad can be veganised (mixed leaves, squash, olives, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds). I went there today (21/6/15) and I also saw mezze being advertised, but can't see any mention of it on their website. This place is very kid-friendly with lots of open space - children welcome until 9:30pm.

Bosco Pizzeria (96 Whiteladies Rd - top)
This place is absolutely lovely. The decor is beautiful, the staff are some of the friendliest in Bristol, and the food is fantastic. The only vegan food on offer here is pizza (minus the cheese) but they will let you have the toppings of your choice. When I was here last, I just asked the chef to chuck on whatever they wanted (I named this the Vegan Surprise). Let them know you're vegan and they'll help you out; their servers are very knowledgeable about all the food on the menu, which is very refreshing. They sometimes fry their mushrooms in butter.

La Grotta (9 Union St, Broadmead)
Touting itself as the only independently run Italian in Bristol, La Grotta apparently does vegan cheese, and according to this May 2015 Tripadvisor review, were very helpful when emailed about catering for vegans. Yum!

The Lanes (22 Nelson St, BS1 2LE)
I went here yesterday (15 June 2015) for the Lanes courtyard cinema. Vegan pizza and Spirited Away is pretty much perfection. It was a regular pizza with no cheese, but it had a delicious balsamic glaze, olives, artichokes and red onion - just ask for any substitutes. Absolutely delicious, and you can have it flat or calzone style, £10.30 for a 12" pizza. PS, the Lanes is a great venue, with a bowling alley and karaoke bar, too!

Pepe Nero (22 Bond St, near Cabot Circus)
I drove past this Italian fast food place yesterday and the word 'vegan' caught my eye, so I thought I'd check them out online, and it looks like they cater for us pretty well! They have pizza with vegan cheese (and tofu) as well as vegan panini - you can find their menu here. Their panini are cheap at £3.50 each, and their pizzas aren't bad either. Now this sounds like my kind of fast food!

Pizza Express (Harbourside; Corn St; Berkeley Square)
They have a section on their website dedicated to helping you find out what is vegan (full allergen info here). Their bases and passata are already vegan, so you can 1) effectively build your own pizza, 2) bring your own sealed vegan cheese for them to add, or 3) order the Pianta (spinach, chestnut mushrooms, pine kernels and artichokes, on a spicy Arrabbiata base).

Planet Pizza (32 Cotham Hill, BS6 6LA and 187 Gloucester Road, BS7 8BG)
They do a pizza called Planet Vegan, with vegan mozzarella and three toppings (they can go gluten-free bases, too). Yum! I can't find it on their website, but last time I went here they had a 2 for 1 deal on pizzas before 7pm, although that may exclude weekends. Bonus: the woman who works in the Cotham Hill branch is always really nice :)

The Stable (harbourside, nextdoor to Watershed)
Perhaps ironically, pizza is usually a good option for vegans (just check the base) so when a friend wanted to go here for his birthday meal I agreed to come along. I wasn't disappointed. I had a Billy the Kid which is veganised thusly:  caramelised onions, field mushrooms,  fresh  spinach leaves, fresh tomato sauce and roasted hazelnuts. Seriously, the flavour combo was delicious (possibly the best pizza I've ever had?), but you can have a look at their other pizzas here. There were loads of us as this birthday meal, so I know they cater for fairly large groups; just book ahead to be sure as it's always packed, particularly in the sunshine!

And Rosemarino - it's not pizza, but if you're after a fancy Italian, this is the place for you!

Rosemarino (90 Colston St; 1 York Place, Clifton)
Their regular menu isn't very vegan-friendly, but they are happy to make vegan food for you if you tell them in advance. When I emailed them to ask, Sam replied with some examples of vegan dishes they've recently prepared (thanks Sam!):
  • Spaghetti di semolina: Homemade semolina spaghetti with courgette, toasted almonds & truffle sauce
  • Farinata: Chickpea flour pizza with charred asparagus, roast cherry tomatoes & black olives
  • Pere cotte allo zaferano: Saffron & white wine poached pear with elderflower sorbet
Sounds delicious - can't wait to give it a try!
